Companion Plants for Tomato

We usually grow companion plants along with other vegetable plants to get more yield from the garden. these companion plants help in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects which is used to pollinate and repels some insects to save plants. I am not going much inside this vast topic but would like to list out some companion plants here to help the growth and get good yield of tomato.



1. Marigolds
Help producing root-knot causing nematodes, slugs, tomato worms etc., The best suggestive variety is french marigold.


2. Carrots
Carrots break up the soil and allows water, nutrients and air supply for the roots of the tomato plants.


3. Garlic
Plant garlic cloves around tomato plants to save them from the attacks of spider mites.


4. Peppers
They both are from the family solanaceae and have similar requirements. Planting them together will help you in fertilizing and pest prevention.


5. Celery
Loose root system of the plant and encourages growth of earth-works and soil microbes.


6. Onions
Because of the pungent odor they emit, onions are very good plant to keep away pest from your tomato plants.


7. Basil
Spider mites, aphids and horn-worms can be repelled easily by planting just 3 basil plants along each tomato plant. You can also plant pudhina/ mint if basil not available.


8. Borage
Borage, commonly known as known as a star-flower, actually help in overall health and taste of a tomato plant. They also repels tomato horn-worms and cabbage worms.


9. Parsley
These biennial herbs attracts hover flies that feast on many pests of tomato plant.


10. Chives
This pretty herb not only helps improve the taste of tomatoes but also helps repel aphids and makes a great addition to any tomato salad.
